From Old Khmer ព្រេង (breṅa), ព្រេង៑ (breṅ, “past, tradition, antiquity; past, traditional, ancient; continuous, unbroken, uninterrupted”) or Angkorian Old Khmer ប្រេង្ង៑ (preṅṅ, idem). Compare Pre-Angkorian Old Khmer វ្រេង៑ (vreṅ). Cognate with Modern Khmer ព្រេង (preing).
