From Ottoman Turkish ناموس (namus), itself derived via Arabic نَامُوس (namus) and from Classical Syriac ܢܳܡܘܿܣܳܐ (nāmōsā). Ultimately from a corrupted sense of Ancient Greek νόμος (nómos).
