According to Jost Gippert, from Old Georgian უბნობაჲ (ubnobay) from the root უბანი (ubani) by cutting out the letter 'n': მოუბნარი > მოუბარი. The words საუბარი, ნაუბარი have undergone the same reductive process (საუბნარი, ნაუბნარი)
