According to Chubinov and Ačaṙean, from Armenian թաթ (tʻatʻ). Alternatively, a Lallwort. Compare also Georgian ტოტი (ṭoṭi, “paw”), Mingrelian ტოტი (ṭoṭi, id.), Svan ტუ̂ეტ (ṭûeṭ, “paw; hand”); Chechen тӏод (tʼod, “paw; hand”), Ingush тӏод (tʼod), Bats ტოტ (ṭoṭ).
