Etymology 1

Cognate with Lao ສວຍ (suāi). Compare Min Nan 媠 (súi).

Jonsson (1991) suggested it was from Proto-Southwestern Tai *suəjᴬ¹ (“handsome; slender”) but most of SWT languages do not have words for it.
