From Proto-Tai *pliːᴬ (“banana blossom”). Cognate with Northern Thai ᨸᩖᩦ, Lao ປີ (pī), Shan ပီ (pǐi), Phake ပီ (pī). Sagart (2020) compared this word with Proto-Austronesian *punti (“banana”).
