Cognate with Latin levir (“brother-in-law, husband’s brother”), Ancient Greek δᾱήρ (dāḗr, “brother-in-law, husband’s brother”), Old English tācor (“brother-in-law, husband’s brother”), Russian де́верь (déverʹ, “brother-in-law, husband’s brother”), Lithuanian dieveris (“brother-in-law, husband’s brother”).
