From Proto-Indo-Aryan *(s)taHyúṣ, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *(s)taHyúš, from Proto-Indo-European *(s)teh₂y- (“to steal”). Variant of स्तायु (stāyú). Cognate with Avestan 𐬙𐬁𐬌𐬌𐬎 (tāiiu, “thief”).
