From Proto-Turkic *tumšuk (“beak”). Cognate with Turkish tumşuk (“large beak”), Kyrgyz тумшук (tumşuk, “beak”), Uzbek tumshuq (“beak”), Uyghur تۇمشۇق (tumshuq, “beak”) and Yakut тумус (tumus, “beak”).
