Back-formation from ομοφυλοφιλ(ία) (omofylofil(ía)) + -ος (-os). By surface analysis, ομο- (omo-, “same, homo-”) +‎ φύλο (fýlo, “gender, sex”) +‎ -φιλος (-filos, “-friend, -phile”), calque of German homosexuell.
