Etymology

Uncertain, perhaps a compound word from é (a variant of éj (“night”)) + vad (“forest, wilderness”, compare vadon). Originally it referred to the darkest hours of the night. The “part of a year” meaning developed from the expression éjnek évada (“the middle of the night”).[1]
